Workshops, Lectures, and Performances:

1:15 pm: Auditorium, 3rd floor --
RI International Film Festival kicks off our Healthy Planet, Healthy Living series with a FREE showing of three fantastic documentaries:

1:15 pm -- Queen of the Sun
Directed by Taggart Siegel; 83 min. U S A / Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, 2010
Without bees, Albert Einstein said, “man would only have four years of life left.” From the director of THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN comes a profound, alternative look at the tragic global bee crisis. Juxtaposing the catastrophic disappearance of bees with the mysterious world of the beehive, QUEEN OF THE SUN weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heart-felt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world. Featuring Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva, QUEEN OF THE SUN reveals both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

2:45 - I Remember Better When I Paint
Directed by Eric Ellena & Berna HuebnerLights; 54 min. Belgium/France/Netherlands/U S A, 2009
I Remember Better When I Paint is a 2009 feature-length international documentary film about the positive impact of art and other creative therapies in people with Alzheimer's disease and how these approaches can change the way the disease is viewed by society. The film examines the way creative arts bypass the limitations of dementia disorders such as Alzheimer's and shows how patients' still-vibrant imaginations are strengthened through therapeutic art.

3:45: TRUTH: Fishing Crisis or Government Mismanagement
Directed by Dana Neugent; 60 min. U S A, 2009. This 2009 film takes up the struggle between the fishing industry and government regulation. Town Dock fishermen and others across the Northeast have said increasingly strict regulations designed to rebuild fish stocks have not only dramatically reduced the number of days they can fish and how much they can land but are putting boats out of business. Among the fishermen featured in Truth is Sig Hansen, the Seattle-based captain of the fishing vessel Northwestern. Hansen has appeared frequently in the documentary television series Deadliest Catch.

"The Rhode Island International Film Festival is proud to support public libraries statewide. We share an important mission in serving Rhode Island's diverse communities. RIIFF looks forward to working with the library to bring great cinema to our local audiences,"
-- George T. Marshall, Executive Director of RIIFF
